So how much does a Nextel Cup driver make? Every contract is different and it’s a well kept secret, but a couple drivers have let the world know.
AP is reporting that drivers Sterling Marlin and Joe Nemechek along with their former crew chiefs Richard “Slugger” Labbe and Peter Sospenzo have filed a breach of contract lawsuit against Ginn Racing and Dale Earnhardt Inc.
Marlin and Nemechek lost their jobs a week before Ginn Racing merged with DEI in July. The crew chiefs lost their jobs after the merger. The suit is asking for payment for the remainder of this years contract.
The AP report reported that:
both drivers were due to make $1.2 million this season, and were promised 45 percent of their race winnings and 33 percent of souvenir sales. Nemechek earned more than $4 million in race winnings last season, while Marlin made $3.2 million.
Labbe, the crew chief for Marlin, and Sospenzo, crew chief for Nemechek, were earning $450,000 annual salaries.
