Dennis James, who has started NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races from the flag stand since 2003, died Wednesday. He was 57 and a resident of Fletcher.

James had been involved in racing since the mid 1970s when he was a competitor at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway. In the 1980s he became the starter at Tri-County Speedway in Hudson and later became the chief steward at the track.

Later in his career he returned to Hickory Motor Speedway to serve as chief steward. Prior to being hired by NASCAR in January 2003 James worked with the day-to-day operations of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Series.

Survivors include his wife, Cathy, and their two daughters, Kristen and Kim. Funeral plans are incomplete.

Rob Olson will fill in this week, starting the Truck race at Kentucky Speedway.
