Couple stories came across today that Bobby Labonte, has started a new company.
NASCAR driver Bobby Labonte, a former Winston Cup champion, announced Wednesday the formation of a full-service marketing agency, Breaking Limits.
Labonte, who drives the No. 43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge for Petty Enterprises, has hired a staff and expects to begin operations immediately, offering a range of services that include sales, marketing and public and media relations.
Okay, I can understand that. If you’re in the business, invest in something you know. If it’s one thing Nextel Cup drivers know about, besides driving, it the public relations side of the business. Then I read the next paragraph and about fell out of my chair.
He’s not the first driver to use his motorsports connections to forge a business in the sport. Tony Stewart founded True Speed Communication, a public relations and marketing firm that services Joe Gibbs Racing.
Tony Stewart, public relations expert? I don’t know about that but here’s a list of True Speed Communications clients, taken directly from the front page of their website. The Home Depot, Texas Instruments’ DLP® HDTV brand, Interstate Batteries, SunTrust, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, Z-Line Designs, Procter & Gamble’s Old Spice brand, Joe Gibbs Racing, Hall of Fame Racing, NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver Tony Stewart, pop-artist Charles Fazzino, photographer James Blakeway and the legendary Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Not listed there, but inside the site is also Tony Stewart Racing, Sprint Sound & Speed and Wayne Taylor Racing.
I’m sure once the Tony haters find out he owns a PR firm, the jokes will be coming in left and right.
