Daytona 500 Qualifying

Tony didn’t have a very good qualifying run today and will start 8th in the second Gatorade Duel on Thursday afternoon. Jimmie Johnson picked up where he left off last year as he took the first Coors Light Pole of the year. Michael Waltrip will sit on the outside of Johnson in his Toyota when the 500 starts.

No Wood Brothers in the 500?

Lee Spencer reports that

Before there was a Daytona International Speedway, Glen Wood raced upon the sand. When the 2.5-miler was finally completed in 1959, the Wood Brothers patriarch qualified the No. 21 Ford eighth but finished 34th after his clutch failed. In 1962, the No. 21 crashed during practice and never started the 500.

Since then, the car has been present for every Great American Race.

Unfortunately, that record now lies in jeopardy after the rear end gear failed during qualifying on Sunday and driver Bill Elliott ended up 45th in time trials Sunday.

Despite his 1988 title that qualifies him for the past champions provisional, Elliott would have to get in line behind Kurt Busch and Dale Jarrett before he would eligible for that pass.

Bill willl start 22nd in the first Duel on Thursday, with Busch starting 13th in the same race. Dale Jarrett starts 14th in Duel number 2. In order to make the race, Bill has to either race his way in or have both Busch and Jarrett race their way in.

We knew this was coming.

FoxSports reported that Actress Ashley Judd was easy to spot at the track Sunday. The wife of former open-wheel driver Dario Franchitti was wearing a black sun dress, high heels, black sunglasses and a large, floppy black hat.

Maybe it’s just me but I don’t care what the drivers wives are wearing, even if they are a famous actress. Funny but I don’t recall any reports on what Mrs Jeff Gordon, aka supermodel Ingrid Vandebosch, was wearing last year. Let’s hope this was a one time thing.

  1. The Dodges seem to be missing something that is needed at Daytona, and I’m not sure what it is. I’m sure that Kurt could race his way in to a position, as could Jarrett, which I would love to see. I don’t understand Bill Elliott’s problem with the car, because it supposedly handles more like the cars he started out with in NASCAR, but maybe it is mechanical failings on the part of the team. I would like to see him in the 500 for sentimental reasons, even if he is a backmarker

  2. Get ready. This is just the beginning. Ashley Judd unconvincingly tries to appear as though she is “hiding” from the spotlight, when what she’s clearly doing is trying to garner as much attention as possible.

  3. RevJim - I agree, it would be nice to see Bill in it. Let’s hope he doesn’t have rear end gear problems on Thursday.
