Earl Baltes has always been known as a dirt track man. But on July 27 he’ll be honored with asphalt.

Baltes, who created Eldora Speedway back in 1954, will have a stretch of State Highway 118 named in his honor by the State of Ohio. “Earl Baltes Highway” — marked by a special sign from the Ohio Department of Transportation — will run from State Route 47 in Ansonia north to State Route 119 in St. Henry, and right past Eldora.

“I’m deeply honored,” Baltes said. “Never in a million years would I have expected something like this.”

Track owner Tony Stewart will also be on hand to present Baltes with the Ohio Legislature’s signed proclamation, which became law on July 1. Stewart also plans to race with the World of Outlaws Late Model series after the ceremony.

“Earl has single-handedly advanced the sport of auto racing more than anyone else in this business” Stewart said.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held 4:30 p.m. on July 27. A reception at the Eldora Ballroom will follow.
