KNOXVILLE, Iowa — Jeff Shepard of Upperco, Maryland, opened up the 47th Annual Knoxville Nationals with a win for the Pennsylvania Posse on Thursday, August 9. The win came on what became opening night for the biggest sprint-car racing event in the world after heavy rains washed out the Wednesday night qualifying show and delayed it until Friday night. Tony Stewart Racing’s Paul McMahan finished in 5th place.

McMahan set the night’s fast time with a new National’s track record of 14.817. Heat races were won by Brooke Tatnell, Lynton Jeffrey, Randy Martin, Ben Gregg and Greg Wilson, with McMahan finishing 4th in his heat. Kenny Jacobs won the C-Main and transferred to the B-Main along with Chad Hillier. Travis Cram won the B-Main and transferred to the A-Main along with Stevie Smith, Terry McCarl and Dion Hindi.
