NASCAR More Concerned With Sponsors Than Safety

June 8th, 2007

Once more NASCAR showed it’s true colors. After running into Tony Stewarts car on pit road and nearly hitting his jackman, he got a $100,000 fine, was docked 100 points and put on “probation” until the end of the year. Big deal.  He’s won over $2 million already this year, despite having an average finish of 19.2.  While 100 grand may be a lot to most of us, it’s not much to guys at that level.

What should they have done? Wander around the web and you’ll find that most people, and I’m one of them, think he should have been parked for at least one race.  These guys are racers.  You want to punish them? Don’t let them race.  Tell them to put their car back in the transporter and go home.  No Miller Lite at the track this week.

NASCAR isn’t going to do that because Miller has a lot invested and they might get upset.  Heaven forbid that they wouldn’t get their TV time.  So once more NASCAR proves that safety isn’t their biggest concern, it’s keeping the dollars flowing.  So what if somebody on a pit crew gets hurt?  It took someone getting killed to bring about speed limits on pit road, let’s pray it doesn’t take another death before NASCAR get’s serious about safety.

I’m a little slow, but I updated your link. I agree, Busch got off very lightly and it’s a shame.
