ROSSBURG, OH – Tracy Hines’ closing attempt in this year’s USAC (United States Auto Club) Sprint Border Wars XIV was much to his liking than his opening attack. The veteran New Castle, IN chauffeur dominated Saturday’s Border Wars competition, sponsored by Pak A Sak, at Eldora Speedway.

After getting tangled with another Sprint Car during Thursday night’s opening Border Wars leg at Winchester (IN) Speedway, and sliding upside down for nearly 1000 feet, Hines was not to be denied Saturday night.

Behind the wheel of the Tony Stewart Racing owned Chevrolet sponsored sprinter, with team owner Stewart on hand, Hines jumped into the lead on the opening lap of the 30-lap chase and never looked back.

However, behind him, the story was different, as action prevailed.

Brad Sweet was amongst the first to offer a mile challenge to the determined Hines, but that ended quickly as Brady Short and Chris Windom moved in on him. That forced Sweet to concentrate on the battle for runner-up; rather than setting his sights on Hines.

A wild 9-car incident on lap four changed the complexion of the race.

Among those involved, with three cars flipping wildly, was Short. His night ended with a badly damaged car, along with Robert Ballou, Jerry Coons, Jr. and Dave Darland.

On the restart, Sweet resumed his hunt for the lead, with young Billy Boat joining the scene; but Hines would have nothing to do with that battle.

Sweet’s run for the money ended at the mid-point when he dropped to the pit area with wheel damage after jumping the heavy cushion in turns three and four.

That moved Jesse Hockett, who had disposed of Boat moments before, into the runner-up slot and he appeared to have somewhat of a challenge for Hines, but ran short at the finish.

He finished less than one second behind Hines at the checkered flag, with Boat, Damion Gardner and Daron Clayton completing the top five.
