Help a teammate, Lose the Daytona 500?

February 17th, 2008

I don’t get it.  You give up the lead on the last lap of the Daytona 500 to try and help your teammate who is in 4th place.  Is this what we have to look forward to this year?  First Tony loses the Gatorade Duel on Thursday and cheerfully says that it didn’t matter if he won, as long as the Gibbs team won.  Now he gives up a probable win, in order to help Kyle get a good finish.

This doesn’t bode well for the year.

Congratulations to Roger Penske for getting his first restrictor plate win with Ryan Newman winning the 50th Daytona 500. It’s hard to believe it took him this long to accomplish it.  Who would have thought that after all these years, his cars would run 1-2.

Despite the ridiculous ending, as a fan I thought this was the best Daytona 500 in many years.  I like this new car.

I think Tony went low to pick up a push he knew he wasn’t gonna get from the 12. He didn’t realize that Kyle lost all of his momentum after being forced under the yellow line and having to lift. We’ll never know, but I could have seen a huge wreck if Tony would have attempted the block on Ryan with Kurt attached. I gotta look on the bright side a little, we’re 136 points ahead of where we were this time last year.
