A former touring Outlaw who has already pieced together rides with four different teams this season, McMahan can’t make it to the next race without a certified trucker.
It doesn’t matter if you haven’t met. After all, he picked up his first World of Outlaws win of the season Wednesday at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park thanks to the help of a truck driver he found on Facebook.
“Don’t ask me his name because I don’t know,” McMahan said with a big grin.
With only one crew member – Cody Jacobs – McMahan pieced together his way to the track, around the 5/8-mile oval and out of Victory Lane.

“We don’t even have a four-wheeler,” he said. “We had to bum a ride to get from Victory Lane.”

Despite only having seven spare tires – three right rears, three left rears and one front – and a couple of extra wings, McMahan set the tone for the SPEEDfest event from the drop of the green flag, was patient on a couple of double-file restarts and cruised to his first World of Outlaws victory since Sept. 9 of last year.

“This is where I want to be,” McMahan said. “I want to race with the World of Outlaws. This is where I belong. This is what I want to do. So to come out here and to bounce from car to car is tough to do.

“This is very cool for me. This is one of the top (wins). It’s not as high as my first one, but this one’s really high for me because I got released after one of my best years last year with the World of Outlaws and to come back and show these guys that I can still get the job done is very gratifying.”

After qualifying fifth quick and finishing fifth in his heat race, McMahan, who is currently driving for Tom Buch, advanced to the dash. The dash inversion was a six, starting him on the outside of the front row for the six-lap race. He led the entire race to earn the pole for the 25-lap feature.

It didn’t take long for McMahan to build a giant lead in the main event. With a twister of dust being kicked up around the track, McMahan rocketed to the big advantage on the opening lap. He reached traffic on lap six as David Gravel was the only driver to stay within striking distance.

A caution on lap 10 for the first of two spins by April Wilson bunched the field together and McMahan chose the outside lane on the double-file restart. He again launched to a sizeable margin before getting into traffic on lap 15. Gravel’s throttle linkage broke on lap 18, forcing a caution and sending him to the infield for the remainder of the event.

Chad Kemenah restarted second, but Craig Dollansky roared by on the outside as they exited turn two of the restart and McMahan set sail.

“We really want to congratulate Paul McMahan,” Kemenah said. “He’s an awesome guy.”

The final caution of the race for Wilson’s second spin set up a green-white-checker finish and McMahan was untouchable once again. He built more than a one-second lead in the final two laps en route to the win.

Dollansky held off Kemenah for the runner-up position.

“Paul did a good job and drove a great race,” Dollansky said. “I think he was just actually a little better than I was in the open track. I got close to him on the restarts, but there just wasn’t quite enough room to get by. My hat’s off to him and his team. He did a great job with a lower-funded team and for Paul, it’s great to see him get a win here tonight.”

Danny Lasoski finished fourth with Steve Kinser in fifth. Cody Darrah, who set fast time with a lap of 16.257 seconds, was sixth and Sammy Swindell held onto his World of Outlaws points lead with a seventh-place result after two engine changes during the night. Donny Schatz was eighth, Joey Saldana ninth and Kraig Kinser rounded out the top 10.

Lasoski, Saldana and Swindell each claimed a heat race victory and Justin Barger won the Last Chance Showdown.

By the way, McMahan needs that truck driver by Saturday. He plans to head to Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y., for the next World of Outlaws event.

Defending race-winner Jerry Coons, Jr. of Tucson, Arizona leads the charge aboard his RW Motorsports #27 as two-time series champion Levi Jones of Olney, Illinois still looks for his first win on a mile in the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing #10. Jones finished second in all four dirt Silver Crown races in 2011 and claimed the pole for last year’s “Hoosier Hundred.”
Just days before running the Indy 500, Coons’ new teammate at RW Motorsports, Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Indiana, is scheduled to race in his third “Hoosier Hundred.” Clauson has been teammates the past two seasons with Jones.

One week after the World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Car Series raced on three consecutive nights, Tony Stewart Racing’s (TSR) Steve Kinser and Donny Schatz, along with the rest of the traveling Winged Sprint car stars, will hit the track three more times this week. A slate that includes a pair of stops in New York, beginning with Wednesday’s race at Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge, N.Y., and concludes with their only 2012 appearance in Maryland. Saturday the Outlaws return to Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y., for the first time since the fall of 2008 and, the following night, the series makes its first stop at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway since the summer of 2005.

Kinser can’t get to the next race fast enough after Saturday night’s performance in the TSR No. 11 Bass Pro Shops/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet Maxim. The 20-time WoO champion picked up his first victory of 2012 at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and followed that up with a triumph in the special 10-car match race, tabbed the Morgan Cup. He’ll look to continue the streak Wednesday at Rolling Wheels, where he is an 11-time winner.

Another shot at Rolling Wheels Raceway may be just the medicine Schatz needs following a disappointing weekend at Williams Grove. He is a two-time winner at the 5/8-mile dirt track, with wins in 2004 and 2006, and has earned top-five finishes in five of his last six starts there. Schatz is seeking his fourth victory of the season behind the wheel of the TSR No. 15 STP/Armor All/Chevrolet J&J. The four-time WoO champion will look to breakthrough for his first win at both Orange County Fair Speedway and Hagerstown Speedway. The four-time WoO champion has been close to victory at each track. In June 1999, and again in September 2007, he finished second at Orange County. Schatz last competed at the 5/8-mile dirt oval in September 2008 and finished fifth. His best finish at Hagerstown was also a runner-up finish, which he earned in July 2001, and his most recent race at the half-mile clay oval was during the 2005 season.

Kinser was victorious at both Orange County and Hagerstown early in his career. The Bloomington, Ind., native won the Outlaws’ first race in Middletown in June 1983, and added triumphs in 1985, 1987, 1992 and 1993. He has finished fourth his previous two races at the facility. Like many tracks that have been on the WoO schedule for years, Kinser has both A-Feature and preliminary main wins at Hagerstown. He was first victorious in 1980, and earned both A-Feature and prelim wins in 1990, 1991, and 1994. Kinser last circled the Hagerstown half-mile in August 2006, when the National Sprint Tour competed there.

Kinser’s victory Saturday at Williams Grove was the 571st WoO A-Feature win of his illustrious career. It allowed him to close the gap on points leaders Sammy Swindell and Schatz, who had swapped the top spot in the standings following six consecutive races before struggling Saturday. “The King of the Outlaws” made up valuable points, erasing a 54-point advantage Swindell had over him entering the race. Kinser now ranks second, trailing Swindell by eight markers, and he leads Schatz by four.

Wednesday at Rolling Wheels, the grandstands open at 5:30 p.m. EDT. Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. For tickets and more information on the event, call the World of Outlaws at (877) 395-8606, or visit www.RollingWheelsRaceway.com.

Saturday at Orange County, racing is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. EDT. For more details and ticket information, visitwww.OrangeCountyFairSpeedway.net.

For the weekend finale on Sunday at Hagerstown, the pit gates will open at 2 p.m. EDT with the grandstands opening at 4 p.m. Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. For more details and ticket information, call SLS Promotions at (815) 344-2023 or visit the track’s website atwww.HagerstownSpeedway.com.

Race fans unable to attend this week’s races can catch all of the action on DIRTVision.com. Fans can listen live as Johnny Gibson, “Voice of the Outlaws,” calls the action as he does at all WoO Sprint Series events on the DIRTVision.com cybercast, as well as on the DIRT Radio Network.
Steve Kinser, Driver of the No. 11 TSR/Bass Pro Shops/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet Maxim:

There is nothing like winning races. Coming out victorious last Saturday night at Williams Grove had to be a big boost. Can you explain your emotions following the victory?

“Winning races does a lot of things. You get your confidence better. Your attitude is better when you get to the track and go through the gate. Confidence, or the lack thereof, can really mess things up for you. Even though I’ve won a lot of races, when you go through dry spells like that, you start questioning yourself and a lot of things. I know what we’ve got here. This is a team very capable of winning a lot of races. If we can get our cars like we had them the other night, I think we can be good the rest of the season.”

All three tracks on the schedule this week are of the larger variety. Do you have a preference in terms of competing on the bigger or smaller tracks?

“I’m excited about going to Rolling Wheels, Orange County and Hagerstown this week. We’ve lost a lot of the bigger tracks over the last eight to 10 years and it’s going to be nice getting back to both of them. If I had to choose, I’d say that I like the bigger tracks just a little better. They are still a lot of fun to make the speed and get the cars working the way they do on the big tracks.”

Donny Schatz, Driver of the No. 15 TSR/STP/Armor All/Chevrolet J&J:

Last weekend, you found yourself deep in the field and not really able to drive forward like you have been able to in the past. How tough is that as a competitor?

“It’s really tough. This sport isn’t about follow-the-leader racing. A couple of the guys were able to get their cars working well enough to drive forward last weekend, so it can be done. We did it the weekend before at Eldora, but we can’t consistently do it, nor do we want to be doing it all the time. We seem to be at the mercy of how we qualify, and that hasn’t been good for most of the year. That’s probably the most frustrating part. We’ve tried just about everything to get our package working the way it needs to. Until we figure that out, we’re simply going to be spinning our wheels. This team won’t quit and we’ll figure it out.”

Does having three races this week give you and your team more opportunities to find the right combination?

“You have to race to get better. Sometimes you can overthink things when you have five days between races. We tried to learn some things this weekend and the STP guys have spent the past couple of days preparing for Rolling Wheels. The positive thing is that we have had success there in the past. At least, we have an idea of what to expect there. We have to take it one step at time. Make a good qualifying lap on Wednesday and start making progress. And then try to build on it at Orange County and Hagerstown.”

Eldora Speedway will once again play host to the all-star dirt Late Model race featuring more than 25 world renowned drivers as they battle for dirt supremacy on the half-mile clay oval where HBO Pay-Per-View® will present the event LIVE in high-definition to the entire nation. Net proceeds from the telecast will support Feed The Children, a U.S.-based charity that domestically has helped more than 365,000 families since 2009 through its Americans Feeding Americans Caravan.

The eighth annual Prelude To The Dream joins racing luminaries from all disciplines at one track, on one night as they pilot 2,300-pound dirt Late Model stock cars capable of putting out more than 800 horsepower. It is One Perfect Night.

Tony Kanaan of the IZOD IndyCar Series will again compete against Danica Patrick, who in 2012 has made the full transition from IndyCar to NASCAR. They’ll rub fenders with straight-liners Ron Capps and Cruz Pedregon of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. Dirt regulars Steve Kinser and Donny Schatz, who have collectively won 24 World of Outlaws championships, will race for the first time in dirt Late Models. All will join NASCAR stars such as Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Clint Bowyer, Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne, Bobby Labonte and many others, including a band of brothers: the Busch brothers – Kurt and Kyle – and the Dillon brothers – Austin and Ty.

The live, commercial-free, high-definition broadcast will begin at 8 p.m. EDT (5 p.m. PDT) with an immediate replay. The Prelude To The Dream has a suggested retail price of $24.95 and is available to more than 92 million pay-per-view homes. HBO Pay-Per-View is the leading supplier of event programming in the pay-per-view industry. Ordering information and up-to-the minute racing information is available at either www.PreludeToTheDream.org or www.HBO.com. Updates can also be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/PreludeToDream and on Twitter at twitter.com/PreludeToDream (@PreludeToDream).

The 2012 edition of the Prelude To The Dream includes hot laps, qualifying, heat races and a 40-lap feature with double-file “shootout style” restarts. New participants include Patrick, Kinser, Schatz and Ty Dillon, who will join Stewart, Capps, Kenny Wallace and Kenny Schrader as drivers who have participated in every Prelude To The Dream since 2005, where Wallace was the inaugural winner.

“We have the most diverse group of drivers we’ve ever had for the Prelude, and for the first time, the Prelude will be broadcast in high-definition,” said Stewart, owner of Eldora Speedway and a three-time winner of the Prelude To The Dream. “This year’s event is going to be a can’t-miss show. We’ve added 10 laps to the feature and partnered with a great charity in Feed The Children. You’re going to see some intense racing by everyone, including some drivers completely out of their comfort zone. We’ll all be racing for a trophy, but also to make an impact with the more than 16 million children who are at risk of going hungry right here in America.”

For the top-10 finishers in the Prelude To The Dream, Feed The Children will send a food truck to each driver’s hometown or city of their choice.

“This is an excellent opportunity to bring attention to the nationwide problem of child hunger by working with these world-class drivers,” said Rick England, chairman, Feed The Children board of directors. “Their efforts will allow more families to put food on the table and help us provide a solution to those hard hit by the current economy.”

The seven previous Prelude To The Dream events have collectively raised more than $3.5 million. With each year’s event gaining significant stature and mainstream interest, Stewart’s ultimate goal is to have the 2012 Prelude To The Dream raise $1 million, with the proceeds benefitting Feed The Children.

“It’s an ambitious goal,” admits Stewart, “but if we don’t set the bar high, we’re not pushing ourselves the way we should. That’s our goal, and me and everybody else associated with this event is going to do everything we can to meet that goal. Now, we just need everyone out there to purchase the event, enjoy all the action going on at Eldora, and know that their dollars are going to a very worthy cause.”

“Each year we are thrilled to bring the exciting live action from Eldora into living rooms across the country,” said Tammy Ross, Vice President, HBO Pay-Per-View & Sports. “This year’s benefitting organization, Feed The Children charities’ mission is that no child should go to bed hungry, and the HBO Pay-Per-View team is thrilled to bring the Prelude To The Dream to fans everywhere to help further that mission.”

With no points and no pressure, the Prelude To The Dream is a throwback race, allowing drivers to step back in time and compete for the reasons they all went racing in the first place – pride and a trophy. And they’ll do it on the same surface racing legends A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti competed on nearly 50 years ago.

For those who want to see the Prelude To The Dream in person, tickets are available online at www.EldoraSpeedway.com or by calling the track office (937) 338-3815. Act fast – the race has sold out in previous years.

The event was held in conjunction with the Midwest Sprint Car Series.

After polesitter Levi Jones grabbed the early advantage, Schuerenberg used a tall cushion to take the lead on lap four. He would never relinquish it, setting a torrid pace through traffic and establishing a 30-lap track record in his Hank Byram-owned Fatheadz Eyewear – R&B Trucker’s #35 Spike/Rider.

“Anytime you’re out front, you just try to keep your momentum up and keep clicking off laps. Once we got the track blown off a little, I could just run the top nice and went right by Levi. I was trying to keep my rhythm and with the car a little tight, I couldn’t be conservative, really. I like winning at Haubstadt – it’s a great track with a great crowd, and it’s always great to get another USAC win,” an excited Schuerenberg said after his seventh career win.

Jones started to reel in Schuerenberg late in the race, but he ran out of time to post his first win of the year. The five-time champion made up ground on the bottom in his Tony Stewart Racing – GM Performance #20 Maxim/Kistler Chevy before coming home second.

“I thought that the bottom would be pretty good. We finally cleaned it off after being a little too snug. We were definitely good at the end, better than we’ve been lately. We’ve made some changes and got our car feeling like a race car again, which is good with all the races we’ve got coming up,” Jones said.

The battle of the race unfolded behind the top-two as they stretched out a straightaway lead. Chase Stockon and Brady Short traded the third spot before Daron Clayton came calling. In the end, it was Cullman, Alabama driver Kevin Thomas, Jr. coming out on top of a duel with Clayton to notch his career-best finish of third in the Black Jack Oil Company – Indy Metal Finishings #9K DRC/Rider.

“It was great to battle with Clayton there at the end. This is only my second USAC top-ten ever, and for it to come at my favorite race track, it feels really good. Just being able to run up there with these guys is great for me,” the 20-year old Thomas, Jr. said.

Clayton took fourth in his first race of the season aboard the Chad Smith Motorsports – Cornwell Tools #92 DRC/J&D Performance. Stockon held on for the fifth spot in his Terre Haute First Financial Bank – Superior Tank & Trailer #32 DRC/Fisher.

Because of a short rain delay earlier in the evening, time trials were cancelled and heat races were run utilizing passing points. With the event varying from a traditional format, all teams in attendance were awarded appearance points only.

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – Steve Kinser cruised to a pair of victories Saturday at a packed and rowdy Williams Grove Speedway, first snapping his 27-race winless streak with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series and later claiming the Morgan Cup on behalf of the series.
Kinser, the World of Outlaws career wins leader, entered the event with only five feature laps led this season. That changed dramatically as he led the final 23 laps of the $12,000-to-win main event and then dominated all 12 laps of the Morgan Cup – a race featuring five World of Outlaws drivers and five Pennsylvania Posse drivers in a showdown about bragging rights, a sterling silver trophy and an additional $4,000 prize.

“We had been running top fives, but hadn’t been able to get to Victory Lane,” Kinser said. “We got two tonight.”

It was his 571st World of Outlaws feature win and 38th total Outlaws victory at the famed half mile. Both numbers are more than double the next closest driver.

The win combined with trouble from Sammy Swindell and Donny Schatz, who entered the race 54 and 46 points ahead of Kinser, respectively, created an even closer points battle.

Swindell, who had a tire issue while running fifth on lap 23, finished 24th. He holds an eight-point advantage over Kinser. Schatz, who violently flipped in turns three and four on the restart following Swindell’s caution, is third in the standings – 12 points behind Swindell.

Kinser qualified fourth quickest of the 41 drivers and charged from fourth to second in his heat race to lock himself into the dash. The random inversion was a six, starting Kinser on the inside of the second row – which is where he finished.

Kinser darted to second on the opening lap of the feature as Craig Dollansky rocketed into the lead. As drivers were in various lines across the track, Kinser was the premier car on the bottom and he used a run off turn two to grab the lead on lap 8.

He quickly pulled away until the first caution of the race on lap 11 for Logan Schuchart, who spun out between turns one and two. Kinser chose the inside lane for the restart and again found himself with a comfortable before the caution waved on the restart lap for a handful of cars who collided in turn four.

“The only way we was going to get into any trouble was trying to pass some lapped cars,” he said. “I don’t know if I could have gotten out in the second groove and passed or not. I think I could move around as good as anybody.”

The inside lane worked for Kinser again on the restart and more drivers began to move to the bottom groove. Greg Hodnett passed Dollansky for the runner-up position on lap 12 and closed on Kinser as the duo entered traffic on lap 19.

The cautions for Swindell and Schatz closed the gap for Hodnett, who was unable to get around Kinser for the top spot.

“We did the best we could,” he said. “Unfortunately it turned out second. Considering Steve Kinser, the greatest World of Outlaws driver ever, just beat us, I think I can live with it.”

Polesitter Danny Lasoski, who dropped to fourth place in the first nine laps, rebounded toward the end of the race and he passed Hodnett for second place on the restart following Swindell’s caution only to have the position negated by Schatz’s red flag.

“Tonight starting on the pole we thought we had a really good shot at winning,” Lasoski said. “Steve went by us and he was stuck real good. And then the middle of the race here we come when (the track) cleaned off.

“As soon as we had the red flag I don’t know what happened. We pushed back off and had no brakes, so it was just like hanging on the last few laps.”

Lance Dewease finished fourth and Dollansky was fifth. Aaron Ott drove from 12th to sixth, Daryn Pittman placed seventh, Stevie Smith was eighth and Danny Dietrich charged from 22nd to ninth to earn the KSE Hard Charger Award.

Adam Wilt, who set quick time with a lap of 16.936 seconds, rounded out the top 10.

Lasoski, Sheldon Haudenschild, Hodnett and Pittman each claimed a heat race. Don Kreitz Jr. won the Last Chance Showdown.

Since claiming the 1986 Rookie of the Year, Rahmer has amassed eight track championships en route to becoming the winningest driver in Williams Grove history. He added to that list on Friday and picked up his fifth career World of Outlaws feature victory in front of a packed crowd on Night 1 of a weekend doubleheader at the historic paper-clip half-mile oval.
“Any time you get a win against this group, plus our local guys, it’s a good win,” Rahmer said. “When you respect somebody as much as most of the guys around here respect (the Outlaws), it feels really good.

It’s tough to put a whole night together and end up standing here in the winner’s circle.”

The Hall of Famer timed in third quick of the season-high 45 cars. He then finished fourth in his heat race to advance to the feature and lock himself into the dash. The invert was a six, starting Rahmer fourth in the six-lap dash. He gained a position to earn the third starting spot for the 25-lap feature and then he began to play the guessing game.

“I knew watching the (Last Chance Showdown) that there was no way it could sustain life on the top the whole race,” he said. “I just hoped it gave up quick enough and it did. I saw Steve (Kinser) driving across the track in the (Last Chance Showdown) and that’s my best line. We were just fortunate that it gave up just enough right at the right time.”

Rahmer, who rocketed into second place as polesitter Jason Sides took an early advantage in the feature, peaked late in the race. Midway through the event Rahmer fell to fourth place as Greg Hodnett began to work his way toward the front.

Hodnett passed Daryn Pittman and Rahmer to advance to the runner-up position on lap 13. Hodnett reeled in Sides through lapped traffic and slid for the lead in turn four on lap 19.

At that time Rahmer also found a groove and advanced to second on the ensuing lap. He then passed Hodnett for the top spot as the duo exited turn two on lap 21.

“I thought we were pretty decent,” Hodnett said. “I was floating around, not really running the bottom, not really running the top. I just kept doing what I was doing and I think it kind of took half rubber on the bottom of (turn) four. I just kept sliding by it and I was having to slow down too much to get to it.”

The only caution came on lap 22 as Sides appeared to have something break in the front of his car entering turn one while running fourth. He spun up the track and had to be towed to the pits.

Rahmer lined up on the inside for the double-file restart and checked out during the last four laps. Pittman slid Hodnett for second place in the final couple of laps.

“To be good enough to race with Fred and actually pass Hodnett back, those guys have been really good and we haven’t even been in their league,” Pittman said. “It’s fun to be competitive again.

“Every time I thought I had something figured out I’d change around and get better. The track really, really changed a lot as the race went on. That was fun driving it, so that had to have been fun to watch.”

For Hodnett, it was a disappointing end to a promising night in his return to a sprint car. It was Hodnett’s first race back since his father, Hoyette, passed away last Saturday.

“We want to come out with a win every night, but this one would have been pretty nice,” he said. “Obviously we’re going to try again tomorrow, but I really wanted to win this one and it just didn’t work out.”

Danny Dietrich, who claimed his first career World of Outlaws win on Thursday at Lincoln Speedway, finished fourth and Steve Kinser led the Outlaws with a fifth-place finish.

Stevie Smith was sixth, Don Kreitz Jr. placed seventh and Sammy Swindell earned the KSE Hard Charger Award after driving from 23rd to eighth. He also reclaimed the World of Outlaws points lead, which has swapped each of the past seven races.

Craig Dollansky, who set quick time with a lap of 17.118 seconds, finished ninth and Lucas Wolfe rounded out the top 10.

Dietrich, Hodnett, Smith and Wolfe each claimed a heat race victory. Kinser won the Last Chance Showdown and Paul McMahan was victorious in the C Main.

The Outlaws return to Williams Grove on Saturday for a full night of racing that includes not only the 30-lap A-main, but also the Morgan Cup Challenge featuring PA Posse drivers against World of Outlaws drivers in a 12-lap dash.

ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. – May 10, 2012 – The flash bulbs kept popping, the confetti kept falling and the celebration kept intensifying.
It wasn’t a normal Victory Lane. Then again, Danny Dietrich isn’t a normal winner and the World of Outlaws vs. Pennsylvania Posse rivalry isn’t a normal matchup.
Dietrich, a native Pennsylvanian whose 24th birthday is a week and a half away, picked up his first career World of Outlaws victory on Thursday in The Gettysburg Clash at Lincoln Speedway.

“Words can’t express,” a beaming Dietrich said. “I’m ready to go drink a few beers.”

Dietrich was dominant in the first World of Outlaws event at the semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval since 1998. After starting seventh, he was up to fourth place within the first three laps. Following a caution on lap four for Alan Krimes, who spun in turn one, Dietrich took little time finding the lead.

He passed Danny Lasoski for third on the backstretch of lap four and then blew by polesitter Lance Dewease for the runner-up position on the ensuing lap. Dietrich edged Sam Hafetertepe Jr. for the lead as the duo cross the finish line on lap six and quickly checked out.

“When he drove around us on the outside I knew that there was nobody going to beat him tonight,” Hafertepe Jr. said. “That’s the most dominant car that’s been out here in a long time.”

Dietrich had to survive four cautions, including the final three for drivers who had trouble while running in the top 10. Lasoski slowed dramatically on the backstretch on lap 18 and Adam Wilt hit the wall in turn two on lap 24. The final caution came on the restart for fifth-running Doug Esh, who came to a stop in turn two after colliding with another driver.

Despite double-file restarts, Dietrich rocketed to the lead every time and never faced a stiff challenge once he found the top spot.

“All about knowing the track and getting the setup right,” he said. “I felt like we hit it perfect from the drop of the green and hopefully we can do that the rest of the weekend.

“This is pretty much a normal Saturday night for us. We’ve been fast. We just had to clear up a few issues. Luckily we put it all together tonight.”

It was the third win of the season for Dietrich, which comes as no surprise to Dewease.

“Danny deserves to win,” he said after finishing second. “He’s been the best race car in Central PA all year and definitely the best race car here all year.

“He started seventh so he must have been pretty good to get up through there that quick. I’m sure he got to the top before a lot of people did, but he can run anywhere at this race track.”

Hafertepe Jr. was third with Cory Haas charging from 17th to finish fourth. Lucas Wolfe, who hails from nearby Mechanicsburg, was the top World of Outlaws driver as he placed fifth.

Kevin Nouse earned the KSE Hard Charger Award after maneuvering from 23rd to sixth. Donny Schatz finished seventh and is the new World of Outlaws points leader. It marks the sixth consecutive race the top spot has changed.

Fred Rahmer drove from 22nd to eighth, Daryn Pittman finished ninth and Gerard McIntyre rounded out the top 10.

Sammy Swindell, who entered the event with the World of Outlaws points lead, set quick time with a lap of 14.501 seconds. Wolfe, Chad Kemenah, McIntyre and Esh each claimed a heat race, with Bill Stine winning the C Main and Brad McClelland the Last Chance Showdown.

The World of Outlaws face the Posse at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg on Friday and Saturday.

“We’re strong,” Dietrich said of the Posse. “I think we’re always fast when the Outlaws come to town. Hopefully we can keep it up.”

Every team has some sort of rival and competing against them annually simply fuels the fire. It’s that type of animosity the makes life on the World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Car Series tour so much fun. Each and every driver wants to win, but doing better than a rival sometimes even makes not winning tolerable. Since the series began back in 1978, the Outlaws have always enjoyed the rivalry they have with the Pennsylvania Posse, a regional group of drivers who annually present the biggest challenge to the traveling Sprint car racers.

With the Outlaws making their first of three stops in central Pennsylvania this weekend, it’s time for the rivalry to heat up again. For the first time in 14 years, the series will return Wednesday to Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa. Not since May 1998 have the Outlaws taken on the Pennsylvania Posse at the 4/10-mile, dirt oval. The annual May show at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg is scheduled for Friday and Saturday night.

Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) drivers Steve Kinser and Donny Schatz know all about rivalries. Kinser, one of Ted Johnson’s original Outlaws, has been battling fellow 50-something racer Sammy Swindell since the 1970s when they both were the young guns in dirt-track racing. Kinser has taken on all comers through the years, both Outlaws and members of the Posse. Doug Wolfgang, Bobby Allen, Steve Smith, Keith Kauffman, and so many more did their best to beat Kinser and the Outlaws through the 1980s. Later it was the talented Fred Rahmer, Lance Dewease, and Stevie Smith who led the Posse contingent. Schatz joined the Outlaws in 1997, and he and Kinser battled one another through the 2000s, after which they were named the top two drivers of the decade. Schatz found his groove in central Pennsylvania after a few tough years and went from barely making the show to being almost unbeatable.

Both TSR drivers are looking to return to their glorious past when the Outlaws visit the Keystone State Wednesday. Kinser will pilot the TSR No. 11 Bass Pro Shops/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet Maxim in “The Gettysburg Clash” at Lincoln Speedway. He’ll lead the Outlaws into Pennsylvania with 54 of 570 career WoO A-Feature triumphs coming at Williams Grove (38) and Lincoln (16). Schatz, driver of the TSR No. 15 STP/Armor All/Chevrolet J&J, has won 15 races at Williams Grove, with 11 of those being A-Features among his 116 career WoO A-Feature victories.

Kinser is seeking his first 2012 WoO A-Feature victory, and with a winning percentage at Lincoln better than 40 percent – he’s won 16 of 38 WoO starts there – chances are pretty good he’ll be a factor in the outcome. He first came away victorious there in July 1980 and later won four straight WoO stops between 1983 and 1984. He had three-race winning streaks in 1985 and 1994. He finished eighth the last time the Outlaws competed at the track in May 1998.

On that May night in 1998, not many of those in attendance knew much about “The Kid” from North Dakota. Schatz was in his second season with the Outlaws and making only his second career start at the track. During his rookie season, he finished 19th in the A-Feature. In the 1998 race, he came up one spot short of making the race. He finished fifth in the B-Feature.

The B-Feature was a common race to find Schatz in at Williams Grove during his first couple of seasons on the Outlaw tour. That changed after a monumental win, a victory that seemed to turn his fortunes around. After scoring the prestigious National Open in the fall of 2000, Schatz found the winning formula at the track with regularity, winning multiple races annually throughout the decade, including five of seven races in 2007. His last win came in July 2008, when he was victorious in the Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals. This weekend, Schatz hopes to break a 15-race win draught at the track. His best finish at the track last season was third in the Summer Nationals finale.

Kinser first raced at Williams Grove in the summer of 1979 and won his first WoO A-Feature there in May 1981. The 20-time WoO champion has been able to put together a number of winning streaks at the track. He won three straight during the 1983 and 1984 WoO seasons and won four consecutive races there in the summer of 1987. He began a six-race winning streak at Williams Grove in August 1990. His most recent win there came in May 2008. Last season, Kinser was in the top-five in all five WoO races, finishing second in the Summer Nationals opener in July and coming home third in the National Open after leading the first 11 laps of the 40-lap race.

Schatz heads east following a pair of charges last weekend at Eldora Speedway. Friday, he raced from 12th to second and, the following night, he drove from 24th to sixth in the 30-lap A-Feature. The runner-up finish Friday pushed him back on top of the WoO standings by one point, but Sammy Swindell’s regained the lead with a victory Saturday night. The two have swapped the top spot in the standings each of the last five races. Through 15 of 78 scheduled events, Swindell has an 11-point advantage over Schatz.

Kinser joined Schatz on the podium Friday. He started second and was running in that spot until his left-rear tire exploded 20 laps into the race. The Bass Pro Shops crew replaced the tire and he stormed back to third by the finish. Kinser ranks fourth in the standings, 64 points back of Swindell.

Steve Kinser, Driver of the No. 11 TSR/Bass Pro Shops/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet Maxim:

After a 14-year absence, the Outlaws return to Lincoln Speedway. Based on your results there, you must be excited about the chance to compete at the track again.

“A lot has changed in the past 14 years, but I am glad we are heading back there. It was always a track we seemed to do really well at. I know it’ll be a challenge going in there, with as good as those guys who race there regularly are. We are really going to have to be on our game if we’re going to have a chance. I’m probably going to be the only guy there who still has the same crew as the last time we raced there. We’ve added Mark (Angeret) this year, but (crew chief) Scott (Gerkin) and (crewman) Gary (DuBois) were with me there from 1995 to 1998. They’ll give me a car that I can get around there with, and we’ll just see if we are around at the end of the race.”

The weekend includes a pair of nights at Williams Grove. The famed Pennsylvania Posse has been pretty strong against the Outlaws there the last few years. What’s going to be the key if an Outlaw is going to come out on top?

“It’s going to take one of the Outlaw guys having the best car at the end of the race. Those guys who race there all the time are pretty tough. It starts in qualifying. Heck, maybe even before that when you pick a number to qualify. The track can really go away quickly, so you don’t want to be too deep. That’s a big first step. Get qualified and start on the front row of a heat race. Then, you have to finish first or second. The track is just so big. You hardly see anyone coming from too deep and winning there, so you better at least be in the dash if you want to have a shot. There are a lot of things that have to happen to win at Williams Grove. Last year, we were fortunate enough to start close to the front twice and finished with two podium runs. Maybe we can keep that streak going this weekend.”

Donny Schatz, Driver of the No. 15 TSR/STP/Armor All/Chevrolet J&J:

Thinking back to your first couple of years with the Outlaws, do you remember anything in particular about Lincoln Speedway?

“I don’t remember being very good there. I think I made one feature and missed the other. We haven’t raced there since, but I did watch a race there a few years ago. It’s going to be tough, but that’s what makes it fun. You are going to have to get your car right and make the right decisions both in the pits and in the race. Those guys who race there all the time will be tough to beat, but we love the challenge. I know my STP guys will be ready. Rick (Warner) is my crew chief and grew up in the area, so he’s got plenty of experience there. Bob Curtis is one of the guys on the team and he spent a year working with Fred Rahmer, who is about as good as there is there. We’ll all put our heads together and see if we can do a little better than I did the last time.”

After dominating Williams Grove in 2007, you have just one victory in the last 19 races there. How frustrating is that?

“I’d say it’s really frustrating, but we’ve got to keep working on it and get back to winning there. I know we’ve had quite a few good runs in that span, but we’ve come up a spot or two short. Your entire program has to be really running smoothly to win races at Williams Grove. We’re getting there, but we’ve still got a ways to go. I think that is the exciting thing for us. We know we haven’t reached our potential, yet, early this season, but we’re winning a few races and running near the front every night. If things go right for us and we can break that win drought at Williams Grove, I’d say that would be a really big deal for us. That’s the kind of thing that would really give us a lot of momentum.”

So it’s a pretty special race track to me and I’m pretty excited to go there with the Outlaws.”

And the fact that his car owner is co-promoting the race along with SLS Promotions doesn’t hurt.

“To be in a race that he sponsors and to get a little bit of his money back would sure be a bonus for the whole team,” Darrah said as he sported a big grin.

This will be the World of Outlaws first race at the semi-banked, half-mile oval since 2005, when Sammy Swindell claimed the feature. Swindell, who leads the current World of Outlaws points and won the first round of the Kasey Kahne Challenge, has won a series-best seven of the 35 Outlaws events on the racy track.

“It’s a notoriously, fairly slick track by the end of the night,” Kerry Madsen said. “We’re pretty confident on slick stuff, so it’ll be quite interesting to go there.”

Mark Kinser set the track record of 14.945 seconds on July 31, 1999.

The main gate at Hagerstown Speedway is scheduled to open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 7 p.m., qualifying at 7:30 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
