Dover Notes

June 4th, 2007

Truex wins - Who would have thought that the first COT race that Hendrick didn’t win would be by Martin Truex Jr? Kind of interesting that he had such a dominating car while Dale Jr. ended the race on 7 cylinders. I’m sure DEI is going to be putting a lot more emphasis on Truex since Dale is leaving.

Tony vents - Tony didn’t mince words when talking about the way Kurt Busch ruined his day. “There are only a couple bad apples out there, and he’s one of them,” Stewart said.”

In case you missed it, Stewart and Busch were both running in the top 10 when Busch ran into Tony as he tried to pass. Busch nosed into the wall and Stewart went hard into the SAFER barrier on the outside retaining wall.

Tony was also justifiably angry that one his crewman was nearly hit by Busch on pit road. While Stewart’s team was checking the damage to the No. 20 in the pit stall, Busch pulled next to Stewart’s car, forcing jackman Jason Lee to jump back and onto the hood.

NASCAR parked Busch and he finished 42nd. Stewart returned from an extended stay in the garage to finish 40th.

Bill France Jr - Sad news about the death of Bill France Jr.  We never really heard much about Bill, which is the way it should have been because the show is on the track, but we wouldn’t be able to enjoy NASCAR the way we do without his leadership.

“It’s just sad,” Tony said. “You look at what he’s been able to do in the time he’s been with NASCAR and obviously learning from his father.

“There aren’t enough words to describe what he’s meant to this sport and what he’s done for it. I guarantee it’s the biggest loss in racing since Dale Earnhardt, and probably bigger.”

At the end of the FOX broadcast, as Mike, Larry and Darryl were discussing it, I noticed that Darryl was about to cry. In fact, I’m not so sure that he didn’t.  Obviously Bill meant a lot to him, just as he did to the entire NASCAR community. Even if we didn’t know it.
