Crew chiefs to race on all-star night

April 6th, 2007

Just noticed this over at ThatsRacin.com

Some of Nextel Cup’s top crew chiefs will compete in “thunder roadster” cars on the quarter-mile on Lowe Motor Speedway’s frontstretch before this year’s NASCAR Nextel All-Star Challenge May 19.

The 30-minute racing program, including two qualifying heats and a feature, will be part of the pre-race program before the all-star race.

“These guys are all closet racers,” said H.A. (Humpy) Wheeler, president and general manager of Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “And they think they would be good drivers. Now they can show just how good (or bad) they really are. Mainly, it will be a lot of fun and we need more of that in our sport.”

Among those scheduled to compete are Chad Knaus, Jimmy Elledge, Seve Letarte, Tony Eury Jr. and Todd Berrier as well as Fox and Speed analysts Larry McReynolds and Jeff Hammond.

Speed will begin a three-hour prerace show at 4 p.m.

That should be fun to watch. I’d like to see Zippy and Robbie Reiser added to the list though. From what I understand, Robbie was a pretty good racer back in Wisconsin.
