About Me
My interest in racing started in 1960 when my family moved to a small home a block away from the county fairgrounds. Every Friday night in the summer, we would go to the 1/4 dirt track and watch the modifieds and jalopies race. After a few years we moved and my racing was limited to the Wide World of Sports. As I grew older, I drifted away from racing and other than the occasional race on ESPN, racing was just another sport.
In February 1999 I was in my local Home Depot and saw a life size cut-out of Tony Stewart. The cashier told me that he was a new Winston Cup racer that they were sponsoring and that I should be sure to watch for him in the Daytona 500. So I did, and being the type of person I am, I started reading up on him.
When I discovered that he has won in every series he had ever run in (except the Busch Series) and the fact that he was driving for Joe Gibbs, a man I respect, I knew that it would be interesting to see how he did.
The more he raced, the more I became a fan. Tony is a throw back to the days before press agents and multi-million dollar sponsors. He’s a guy who just likes to go out race. He speaks his mind and pays his fines. He’s written some pretty big checks to NASCAR in his career, but he’s never backed down because it was the politically correct thing to do.
